Corretta on their creative music-making process, wanting to tour with Greta Van Fleet & their new album ‘Corretta 1’

Tell us about your album? And what’s the story behind it?

Our debut album, Corretta 1, is a concept album that is centered around a young man who is on a journey to find a cure to his younger brother’s illness. It’s an epic journey spanning from humble beginnings to wild conflicts to well… we leave the last leg of the album unanswered. Jordan, Brig, Jon, Noah and Colton have spent many hours focusing on the craft of the music and its attention to detail. There’s thing you’ll discover that you may have not heard around the first listen.

What got you into music and made you realize that it was your chosen path?

There’s something to be said about how you feel during recording and live performance. It feels natural and just sits well. No anxiety, no fear, just excitement and adrenaline. The anticipation of writing so we can play the music live is pure joy.

What makes your music unique? And how would you describe it?

Our music is an eclectic palette that takes rock and metal and is slowly taking it in a different direction. We see a lot of artists becoming “genre-less” or able to maintain their image while spanning many different types of music. Our band already has a natural tendency to do that because of our wide range of influences collectively and per member. It excites us because our first album is just a taste of what we could cover.

How is your creative process when recording music? And what makes a good recording session?

This first album was a solo project started by Jordan, but he wanted it to evolve and become a beast of its own, so in the creative process, most of it was done in LA and Malibu on his own.

The creative process involves a lot of inspiration from different avenues of art, particularly movies. I would always go on forums and frame the question as film recommendations within a certain criterion. So many people would respond with great answers and I would watch those films.

Through the 3-year process it took to make this album, you can see how many inspirations I pulled from. Everything from Life of Pi to Last Samurai to Uncharted 4 (essentially an interactive movie) A good recording session, to me, involves a set of goals or framework to work in. Then, once we accomplish those goals or stumble upon something out of the blue, we just have fun. Jam, mess around, mix-in-process.

Who are your biggest musical influences? And any particular artist/band you would like to collaborate with in the future?

If I could ever get the chance to even just meet Jimmy Page, he is the reason I started playing guitar. Others are Steve Vai, Misha Mansoor, Mark Holcomb and John Williams for their vision and rebel-spirit to push boundaries.

Give us the top 3 bands you would want to tour with?

Periphery, Greta Van Fleet, Alter Bridge

How do you balance your music with other obligations – family, friends or work?

It’s tough, but we make it work. We can’t fight the feeling, that urge to create music. It never leaves us. As a fresh band, we fund our own projects by working. So we all either have jobs or are in university.

If you had one message to give to potential fans, what would it be?

Corretta’s on the verge of breaking new ground in music. It’s a joy to create music, but more importantly for others to enjoy. We’re so excited to share some news with you soon, but we are hard at work to make sure it’s top notch.

What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects or tours?

We’re currently working on another set of tracks. How it will be released is still unknown.
