Dario Margeli is a musician based in Southern Europe who has been releasing music since 2011. He lived in California for a great part of his life. His European love for Italian music and French 70s Disco music is mixed with the guitars he would hear on Los Angeles radio station KROQ.  They would play the band Bush and their singer Gavin Rossdale which made an impression on Dario’s tastes. His musical style is usually guitar based, but for his new song I’m That Kid he has chosen and electronic production. The style is known as Synthwave or New Retro Wave.  Some of the artists known for this style of music are Kavinsky, Fred Falke, Don Diablo,  Anoraak or Michael Oakley. Usually these artists are interested in the sounds of the mid 1980s. For example, the artists are influenced by the soundtrack for Miami Vice or Beverly Hills Cops movies.  The video for I’m That Kid has 80s style electronic graphics. Watch it here:

To go with the music, is the artwork of the single. It is a digital graphic design drawing which fits the summer poolside sounds of the music.

Before the Synthwave production came, obviously the songwriting which was independent from the production. When Dario writes vocal melodies, he tries to use Persian musical scale influences. This gives the songwriting a little twist and variation so that it doesn’t sound like all the other pop songs that come out today.  Listen to I’m That Kid on Spotify:

Lyrics are very important to Dario. Does the artist have something to communicate?  Dario Margeli refuses to write the typical love interest lyrics.  Instead he is personally on a path of spiritual improvement and finding a path to some happiness. He wants this to reflect in his music. So for example I’m That Kid talks about connecting with the innocence and lightness we felt as kids.  The song tries to help you connect with the happiness you had on the playground when you were a kid. Dario reads motivational authors, such as, Eckhart Tolle, Byron Katie, Pema Chodron or Sergi Torres.

Dario releases only 1 song a year. That is all he can do having to maintain his day job to pay the bills. He has experimented also with Smooth Jazz music playing with guitarists like Hugh Williams. If you speak Italian or don’t mind listening to Italian music, then his catalogue also has songs in Italian.  Without funding, Dario works on all the aspects of the music production, recording, release and promotion himself. Even the music video was filmed and edited at his apartment with added footage from a trip to Eastern Greece.  Indeed frugal traveling is the other passion of Dario. This photo was taken in Mostar, Bosnia.

Taken from the lyrics of the song:

“Deep inside I’m that kid / who didn’t know what the word fear was/

who would play for hours on the rooftop / never thinking of tomorrow”
