Hailed as one of New Orleans’ “most prominent young singer/songwriters” (The Vinyl District), Kathryn Rose Wood has been winning over fans with her dynamic, emotionally honest songwriting since launching her solo career in 2016. The release of Wood’s latest single pairs her with fellow New Orleans-based rapper and mental health advocate, Alfred Banks, trading therapeutically candid verses over an infectious neo-RnB, hip-hop-oriented instrumental – just in time for September’s designation of National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.

With an undeniably cool, jazz-laden production by Chicago producer-phenom Julius Tucker‘Hurt / Heal’ features both artists’ detailing their journeys in accepting, and managing, trauma. “I’m allowed to hurt, and I’m allowed to heal,” Wood sings in this anthemic chorus, the huskiness of her voice ornamenting a vocal melody reminiscent of the 90’s RnB greats. Rounded out with Banks’ clever-yet-honest lyricism and conversational phrasing, ‘Hurt / Heal’ is an affirmation to anyone who has put off their own healing due to fear. As Wood and Banks note, avoiding pain only delays relief. With Hurt / Heal’ the pair has provided a much needed message – albeit with an upbeat, uniquely funky sound – to all in need of emotional awareness, and self-acceptance.
