Music Interview: JRDS delves on debut album ‘Endorphins and Nicotine’, musical influences, creative tastes & more

JRDS-2

Great to have you on Xttrawave. Please, introduce yourself.

I’m JRDS, I’m a non-binary pop-artist from England, now living in Los Angeles, CA. The culture shock was wild but now it’s my home.

What got you into music and made you realize that it was your chosen path?

From being conceived music was the most important thing to me, I remember being SUPER young and singing “My Heart Will Go On” which still holds up and is still a BANGER, from there, I picked up a guitar and got to work on creating music that meant something, from 13 I was writing music but I called it “song therapy” because it was my way of connecting with my heart. Through music I felt free

Tell us about your new music? And what’s the story behind it?

Endorphins and Nicotine is my debut album – it’s about the world we live in and the extremities we go through as humans, we are taught to “pick a side” the society of superlatives, and this album questions that, good or evil, man or woman, red or blue. What if we were neither, or even both. 8 billion humans on this planet, and each one is unique. Endorphins and nicotine transcends the line of these extremes.

What makes your music unique? How would you describe it?

JRDS is a story. a story of pain, courage, and standing up in the room of sheep and saying “I’m different” and celebrating those differences. It’s main genre is pop, using elements from other genres such as trap, electronic, and using melodies and rhythms from rap, rock, and melodies from jazz and r&b. It’s music that refuses to be stuck in a box, and lets the story be told regardless of genre association.

Who are your biggest musical influences? And any particular artist/band you would like to collaborate with in the future?

I’d say my biggest influencers are those who flash their unique DNA to the world. long-time influencers would be Kesha, Troye Sivan, and Foxes. Currently I have Chaz Cadigan, 1975 and Betty WHO on Repeat, and I’m currently most inspired by SG lewis, James Vickery, and Sam Smith.

Which is the best moment in your musical career that you’re most proud of?

Performing at The Globe Theatre, Santa Monica Pride and Releasing this Debut Album. It’s a three-way tie, but I’m super excited for the future, and getting to perform again later this year!

How do you balance your music with other obligations – family, friends or work?

Music is my family, my work and my friends. I’ve found through music I’ve attracted my tribe. I was put here on this earth to do exactly what I’m doing, so everything seems to always fall into place.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?

Stop giving your time to things that don’t serve you.  Create more than you consume. relinquish labels and make YOUR mark.

If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?

If you wake up and you’re immediately unhappy with where you are, use the 14-18 hours that you’re awake to make sure the next time your head hits the pillow, you are in a different place, mentally, physically, spiritually etc. to make sure that tomorrow when you wake up, you smile.

What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects?

Currently preparing for the Endorphins and nicotine Tour as the world appears to be on the up! I have an awesome band, some mesmerising dancers, and an entire escape from reality experience in the works late 2021! <3
