Music Interview: Kevin James on his multi-genre collaborative Dgammafiv, musical influences & debut single ‘Velocity’

DGAMMAFIV-2

Great to have you on Xttrawave. Please, introduce yourself?

My name is Kevin James, founder of Dgammafiv. Dgammafiv is a multi-genre music collaborative based in New York City. Our sound covers a wide spectrum that includes EDM, rap, R&B, pop, afrobeat and latin.  I founded Dgammafiv on the premise that for the most part, all individuals have different styles of music which appeal to them.  That goes for artists in the creation process as well. Basically the concept of Dgammafiv promotes music with no boundaries.

What got you into music and made you realize that it was your chosen path?

I’ve always been surrounded by music. My mother had an eclectic music collection which she exposed me to from early childhood. I always had an interest, but it wasn’t until college, however, where I really got the sense that I wanted to pursue music as a career.  I hosted a program on the college station and later went on to become the Production Director. This experience provided a deeper understanding and professional view of the music industry.

Tell us about your new music? And what’s the story behind it?

“Velocity” is our debut single. The track is a fusion of EDM, pop and future house. It’s a compelling combination of acoustic and electronic elements. The creative process was interesting as initially, all we had was the piano chords that appear in the intro.  After some days of collaboration, the other elements came about and meshed into a song which I’m very excited about. Funny thing is it took more time trying to come up with a title than the actual creation process.

What makes your music unique? And how would you describe it?

As above, what makes our music unique is that on the whole it can’t be categorized as one. The sum of the parts make up who we are and the sound that results from it. The Dgammafiv sound is global in nature, attitude and delivery.

Do you play any instruments? And why do you love it?

Yes indeed. I play the piano and simply it’s just an instrument I’ve always been drawn to. I’m fascinated by the timbre and how you can create an entire mood and vibe of a track just by what key, scale or chord you play. I often find myself browsing YouTube to listen to acoustic piano covers of songs I love.

Who are your biggest musical influences? And any particular artist/band you would like to collaborate with in the future?

My biggest musical influences personally are Michael Jackson, Oliver Heidens, Timbaland and Art of Noise.  I know it’s quite the melting pot of musical tastes lol. I would love to collaborate with a super producer like Nile Rodgers in the future.  His resume speaks for itself. His musical knowledge is immense and he’s a bona fide musicologist.

Which is the best moment in your musical career that you’re most proud of?

You’re looking at it now. Forming a collaborative like Dgammafiv has always been something I’ve imagined and pondered. There’s always some trepidation when you embark on something that is not the conventional way of doing things, however, it’s awesome to see Dgammafiv come to fruition after years of thought.

How do you balance your music with other obligations – family, friends or work?

Two positive things I maintain with respect to balancing music and family is a strict no electronics policy when we’re interacting. The business phone call, email or text can certainly wait. Secondly, I embrace and experiment with various technologies which promote musical collaboration virtually. It allows me to work from my home studio more often than spending time away in lengthy sessions at external studios.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?

I strongly advise aspiring musicians and artists to take the initiative and invest in the music career they work so hard on.  There has never been a better period in the music industry than now to be an independent recording artist. Advancements in technology and the boom of the streaming era has leveled the playing field to a certain degree between indie and majors.  Distribution and promotion tools, networking communities as well as a wealth of resources are readily available for indie artists to progress their career to the next level.

If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?

Definitely! I always want to let them know we’re appreciative of their support. There’s a multitude of music that exists out there so it’s humbling when someone makes your art a part of their listening experience.  I can’t thank them enough.

What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects or tours?

We have two new releases set to drop in April.  First there will be the remix to “Velocity”, titled The Magnum Opus Remix. Then we have a Latin dance track titled “Unforgettable (Inolvidable)” which is set to launch later in the month.  We have another EDM inspired track “Dopamine” in the works as we speak. I’m looking forward to big movements in 2020 and beyond.

About Velocity

“Velocity” is an EDM, pop, future house fusion track that is an excellent combination of acoustic and electronic elements. This debut effort from Dgammafiv looks to set the bar as they move forward with more music for the masses.
