Music Review: Camari – Boys Dont Cry

Camari - Boys Dont Cry-2

Camari, a 22 year old hip hop artist and producer, creates a a project that’s inherently risky and thus, more interesting — a collection of songs that, in addition to being thematically connected, form a dynamic arc. His new mixtape Boys Dont Cry falls into consistent sonic patterns that lock into richly textured grooves, which fall out of the way to allow the rapper’s laid-back vocals to spill out with intensity and magnetism.

The mixtape commences with “Lines,” a lyrical hype onslaught that surpasses the majority of the content to follow. Even better, is that everything else is crazier and more expansive than what comes before it. Having discovered Garageband at the age of 15 and making music ever since, Camari aims to seek recognition among musical peers for his musical efforts. And having produced Boys Dont Cry, he showcases and proves just that.

With tracks like “Nakama” and “Tinder Match,” Camari manages to tap into your mind not just because of the melodic half-singing and half-rapping, but because of the hard-wired sonic details that are dynamic and menacing. The warped and distorted spacey sounds pound with deliberation and simmer at the same unmoving temperature throughout the whole mixtape, especially with a record like “Money N The Power.”

Boys Dont Cry is packed with synthesizer note jabs, along with Camari’s spirited but simplistic chanting choruses. It’s the notable icing at the center of the production, as he stitches the tracks together at the seams with his dark, drifting and ethereal instrumentation. His production does a lot of the heavy lifting dramatically by creating worlds in which these different and unique sounds interact, and his work gives everything that happens texture.

His idol being Tyler, the Creator and his favorite color being pink, its evidence that Camari creates music that’s fun, superbly crafted and wildly eclectic. Most artists try to create a unique, easily identifiable sound, one that anchors their music even if they push boundaries around it. But for Camari, he fights against that model, by peppering his mixtape with different sounds and styles with a warped and spacey approach.
