Music Review: Elina Filice – Disappear

Elina Filice - Disappear-2

Elina Filice offers her audience a guitar-driven, pithy observation which contains a general truth that feels both deeply personal and universally resonant. The singer-songwriter creates something special, something know one wants to experience in their relationship, but when it comes to matters of the heart, you can not help but embrace it.

So imagine you’ve gone on a few dates with your partner and you can’t get enough. Even when you’re not together, they’re texting you. He/she feels strong and present and REALLY into this. Then one day… They disappear. What do you do when they disappear? Maybe you send a text but what used to be a quick response, is returned by… Silence. You think; maybe they’ve been in a bad car accident and don’t have their phone?

When they disappear after coming on strong it can stir a feeling of eternal panic that quickly drives into you calling your besties and going over every detail of the last time you saw them. You may be thinking; what did I do wrong? Have they met someone else?

The swooning tune of “Disappear” is as much an ode to uncertainty as the title suggests, it sees Elina struggling to come to peace with the notion that “this person may leave me high and dry!” The third single, and second release from her band, Elina + the Kicks, “Disappear” matches its sombre electric guitars to gorgeous melodies and lyricism that cut a little bit deeper. Elina shows a knack for communicating this feeling so gracefully, it’s beautiful but bittersweet at the same time.

Clearly, it’s more complicated and hurtful when you don’t want your relationship to end, but your partner does. When somebody disappears with no response, it’s not a good sign. It’s also hurtful, for sure. Deleting every trace of the person is sometimes the best thing to do, though it’s painful.

They may reappear, however. If they do, that’s when one must be strong and not let the person back in again to prevent the pattern from repeating. Otherwise, you’ll be left feeling empty and betrayed again. Unless, of course, there was a legitimate, true reason for the magical disappearing act, though in most cases one can’t think of any  legitimate excuse. Can you?

But we’ll never truly understand why some people think that disappearing is the best course of action when you want out of a relationship. The sound of an artist claiming her commitment, “Disappear” becomes a terrifically well-rounded piece of music, that does good in being so honest and so direct. Recorded by Elina’s main producer, her Dad, there are no more lines to color within, and the song’s candid, unpredictable songwriting is all the more refreshing for it.
