Music Review: Glocck Vee - IDGF ABOUT YO HITTAS

Glocck Vee’s voice is pitched down, modulated to a near robotic tone, conjuring moments throughout out the song that are briefly forgotten. His single “IDGF ABOUT YO HITTAS” features lo-fi drum loops and a bassline that gives way to sobering moments.

The song features a full of dire implications, and employs the same mix of serious reflection and satire that resonates with a piece of cultural criticism. Glocck Vee’s record rides on a theme of gun violence, probing the nuances of American gun culture and its clichés.

He goes in on the track and delivers gun toting rants but does little in being creative with his words. He dictates his relationship to firearms and becomes the tough-talking street dude with gun culture in his blood. There’s a prevalent depressive feeling when you listen to songs like this.

At the very least, if you are going to rap about the trap lifestyle and death by a bullet is the only way out, its best to be a metaphorical genius with your rhymes. That’s what separates the artists that achieve mainstream success vs those who get a couple of views on SoundCloud. The clear lack of lyrical skill makes the single be thrown into the pit of mediocre rap songs that have plagued the internet.

“IDGF ABOUT YO HITTAS” does little in sounding thoughtful or inspiring as the rapper pokes out his chest to rap from the perspective of a brash O.G. The beat carries a kind of deep bass and dark synths but the lack of a catchy melody or phrase just feels like shooting yourself in the foot.

Glocck Vee has potential in striding towards something unique and original that makes him stand out among the noise. Utilizing more magnetic grooves with unconventional vocal samples, foggy drums and off-center piano chords can be a huge boost. And best advice of all is to literally write lyrics all damn day and not come up with lines that sound “weird” or “goofy.” If you want listeners to feel your trials and tribulations, your lyrics and performance delivery should also sound ferocious.
