Music Review: Jacob Seeger – Down

    Jacob Seeger - Down-2

Jacob Seeger lays back and plays to his strengths on a record that sees the budding artist be voracious in appetite and ideas. He’s a soulful dude and is keen on experimenting with new, modern and more youthful sounds on his latest single. It’s scope is broad, its palate lush and brims with vibrant color.

On his new song, “Down,” every minute is dripping with smooth chords, funk-influenced rhythms and a retro quality to the production. He mainly sings about love, never too deep or personal but he blends his warm, ingratiating funk with sexed-up self-indulgence and hot-buttered excess with edgy lyrics.

If presence was the only thing that mattered about being a musician, then everything Jacob Seeger touches would be a classic. The man was born to entertain, and you can feel his performative joy emanating through punchy drums, smooth melodic synths, guitar riffs and his silky crooning that brings it all home. He’s subtly evolving into a more nuanced performer, one who can still sing with grit and force but also bring in the heart and passion needed to move audiences.

With influences such as Drake, Majid Jordan, Justin Timberlake, and SZA, the singer wants you to know that he is also a more mature songwriter and goes beyond the guitar licks, warm synths and exquisite, powerful vocals. Does his formula work? Well, it all depends on how your ears perceive good-sounding music, but Jacob Seeger answers with transparent gentle romanticism, not to mention his poetic generosity, and delivers a chill, focused and purposeful mood.
