Music Review: JUBILEE – Peaches

Gia Cezar - Peaches-2

JUBILEE infuses more amicable elements of her sound into something lighter and more nebulous, employing syncopated beat repetitions and pulsating rhythms that come off melodic and digestible.

Her new single “Peaches” makes for a pleasant listen from start to finish. Anything could happen next but by configuring the song’s spatial and textural qualities, the listener waits patiently to hear what’s about to unfold. It’s a small change here, a mere tweak there, but the inner mechanics of it all registers powerfully on the ear and, perhaps more importantly, on the mind.

A blend between Samba and Dream Pop, JUBILEE filters her Brazilian-American background and cultural traditions into the music through minimalism and electronic music’s locked-in rhythms, and crafts a musical piece that is just as absorbing as it is inviting. “Peaches” is filled with moments that give you glimpses of a paradise in heaven, but like the afterlife itself, it’s always out of reach, distinct only in brief flashes and in feverish moments.

Perhaps the biggest limitation to it all is that “Peaches” is in no way a headphone listen, especially if you want to dance to it. If there is a possible maximum-pleasure listening experience, it will come from luxuriating in this music very loudly and perfectly articulated over a pair of high quality speakers while you get your body moving to the groove. Perhaps this is true of all dance music, but in order to really have that ecstatic event JUBILEE aims for, you simply cannot be behind a pair of headphones.

The atmosphere is consistent, the pacing is so uniform, and the sounds are created with such a defined set of instrumental sources that all the pieces blur into one. These creates special moments in “Peaches” when the beat becomes vaporous and then solidifies, giving you a sense of how atmospheric JUBILEE can make electronic music feel.
