Music Review: Melissa Black – The Eden Project

The Eden Project EP Gatefold Art Melissa Black 200918 MASTER

Melissa Black connects to her higher spirit through nature and offers a good and positive feeling of oneness with the earth and its life forces. On her new album The Eden Project, it encompasses a deep, sensual knowledge about becoming one with the universe and the singer-songwriter realizes that it’s something continuously yearning to be realized.

Much of the album is catchy without detracting from the artist’s careful attention to texture, a combination that’s best illustrated on the song “Eden”. On the surface, the straightforward rock rhythms are crisply played with honest raw energy and light chord progressions. But a deeper dive reveals a slightly more complex sound with bouncy piano keys, ethereal vocals, and surging guitar riffs.

Melissa Black makes the listener use all their senses to hear, see, smell, feel, and even taste the music and experience vivid imaginations of an engulfing and enriching natural world in all its depth and splendor. Through her music the artist creates that spark moment when the sensing mind quiets and overtakes the thinking mind.

The artist provides a softer-spoken lead on songs including the introspective “Fallen Angel”. In addition to its pensive lyrics, its acoustic guitar and gentle piano offer a subtler approach without dissipating the atmosphere.

For any listener, they might be overwhelmed by the flood of emotions that Melissa Black conveys throughout her music. But the end result is worth it, much like a detox, you’ll feel lighter, at peace with yourself and most importantly, feel truly alive. On “Red Blood Moon” Melissa Black explores her free-spirited nature, looking within herself and accepting that she has a body full of feelings and that she needs to express and fulfill these feelings.

Along with its songwriting, the album’s artful execution and melancholy dreaminess tie it all together, like a novel that’s consistently compelling as it moves through multiple perspectives. Melissa Black radiates with love and shares that enthusiasm with her audience, for her work is impossible to ignore – and provides confirmation, if it’s needed, that her impact on the music world is very far from tiny.
