Music Review: Melyz – Bad Together

Melyz - Bad Together-2

“Bad Together” is an ecstatic, body-moving, and curiously serene song. It’s probably sensible to take the rhetoric surrounding the lyrics with a big pinch of salt, but it’s undeniable that for Melyz, the idea has been galvanizing. Pretty and nice are relegated to the background of the artist’s music, and the menacing darkness of her lyrics take center stage. Melyz places aesthetic pleasure on dark feelings up front. More than anything else, the word to describe her music is bone-chilling. Even though simplicity is baked into the song’s production, the lyrics have an undemanding, even liberating, lightness that makes it fun and dangerous at the same time.

“Bad Together” highlights relationships where lovers tend to get activated in each other’s presence. Either one of you feels the fire roar deeply and passionately inside your heart. And sometimes that fire takes over, like a burning rage inside of you. Out of nowhere, intense feelings such as jealousy, anger, frustration, and fear emerge. But for Melyz, it’s all about embracing this dark side of ourselves when things get too intense and using these emotions to our advantage.

Maybe its enjoying the burning embers without becoming engulfed in flames. Because in a flip of a switch, you’re off and running like a volcano! It’s overpowering and completely out of you control but at the same time it’s wild, the kind that defines lovemaking in all of its raw, primal, and passionate glory. This is the Dark Pop Melyz hints at.  It’s music that speaks to the inner you; the hidden part of your soul that’s always begging and waiting to come outside and make you feel alive.

The song feels bold and upfront: a journey through electronic-infused modes defined by its heady propulsion. The bulk of the record is dominated by a thumping four-on-the-floor kick, but the unrelenting drums are a framework through which Melyz delivers her gorgeous vocals and drapes dazzling electronic progressions—glimmering stargazer melodies, glowing synth lines, and moonlight tones that evoke a spooky atmosphere. The result is music that stirs the soul as well as the body, and “Bad Together”—sparkling, ecstatic, slightly enigmatic—does just that.
