Music Review: Mr MooQ – Adelina

    Mr MooQ - Adelina-2

We all have that one artist who inexplicably coaxes you beyond rational comprehension. It can be caused by the singer, the music – or sometimes both; every note, beat, lyric, it just sends you into a hazy state of trance. One such artist to do that is Mr MooQ. His style of music is best described as a broad, epic soundscape, with swooping electronic passages that build up to a fairly satisfying conclusion: the synthesizers lock into place with an electronic dominated sound, the arrangement moves from verse to chorus with more danceable elements added to it, and the singer’s voice soars throughout the music with much conviction.

On his latest single “Adelina”, Mr MooQ does surprise you from time-to-time, his vocals consistently hit the right mark at some points. The melodies for the verse bring in a decent level of melancholy and add to the mellow sound behind it. Here, Mr MooQ delivers a pretty wild narrative involving the subject. The song tells about a love gone sour which leads to  a crime of passion. And with some little golden nuggets of love advice and regrets nestled away that show up from time-to-time, Mr MooQ finds himself dealing with a life-ending situation, this time his very own. And despite the down-hearted songwriting, the chorus is catchy as hell.

“Adelina” has plenty of keyboard sounds that include amazing chords and a groove that goes along with added Caribbean influences heard in the drums. Other highlights include the backing vocals which often add weight to the song. Mr MooQ is a master class in distributing his vocal cries in the perfect spots here while otherwise letting the groove take its time. It’s also certain that Mr MooQ’s reflective and empathetic lyrics stand as the song’s greatest strength. He finds that same sweet spot in this lovingly bizarre storytelling, quite epic in showing how someone can come into your life and reshape it completely.

This is what makes “Adelina” a special record. It beckons. It has a way of lulling the senses and then prodding you awake. It follows well-trodden paths to previously undiscovered destinations. It’s music that stirs up deep emotions hidden in the darkest parts of a heartbroken soul. The music is smooth with no jarring left turns or moments of rupture, but it has a remorseful mood suffused into it, and its success is the way that it subtly fleshes out the dimensions of your soul with a seemingly dramatic narrative.
