Music Review: Mr MooQ – Complicated

Mr Mooq - Complicated EP Cover Art

Mr MooQ plays some modest rock, propelled by claps and a strutting gamecock of guitar licks, he sings with such heavy effect but none of these endeavors turns him into a star. The artist seems to be skipping over the Beatles’ influence entirely, when he reaches back to the ’60s as he tries his best to harmonize his nasal vocals towards new adenoidal highs.

His single “Complicated” from the self-titled EP doesn’t make the perfect cut when it comes to sounding great. It goes into half-sketches where you sense the recording was done in a dilapidated recording studio. The song itself is true to its title. It evolves into this weirdo love-affair rock, and ethereal acoustic ballads, while line by line Mr Mooq toggles between profundity and inanity, melancholia and nonsense.

It’s a victory lap as far as the introduction goes and a celebratory whoop-along when it comes to the bridge. The instrumental saves the artist from embarrassment with its glorious amount of melodic strings, striking percussion and its solo saxophone piece.

Mr Mooq knows his way with the juxtapose of strange, slippery words, drawing inspiration from love poetry but his inability to clearly and effortlessly hit those high notes with ease is what sets him back. “Complicated” seems like a testing ground to see where the artist’s talents lie.

No doubt, the instrumentation and songwriting is exceptional with a few tweaks needed here and there. But more practice is needed if he is to sway the minds of listeners who are tuned to pitch-perfect vocals they routinely hear on the radio.
