Music Review: Same Days – Consciousness

Same Days - Consciousness-2

Same Days, a London-born, Spain-raised rap artist, debuts his new album Consciousness, with hard-spitting bars and inspiration flows, and this end-to-end concept is executed with little note-spinning or boring lyrics that just serve the story to his album.

The artist takes a big risk in releasing a 12-track album, something that’s rare nowadays, but he nails it. This more expected, mumble rap-favored success still surprises with its vigorous sense of purpose. Besides, Nessly’s appearance, Finley Trusler,  and Kellond, all offer some great moments.

More of a solo effort than a team project, the guest artists still play their parts excellently — in fact, some of the best verses go out to featured contributor Kellond. Without ever being outshone nor outright stealing the show, he does some of his best rapping.

With “My Fault” the storyline starts to slowly unfurl, with more grittiness that Same Days provides for himself. As for his half-singing and half-rapping, he’s at peak performance on this track. Yet for the album’s lyrical consistency, the production lags behind with a fraught dependence on clean, carefully arranged narrative sequences.

For an emcee that lives in between what often sounds like a fun life of cars, women and money, and non-sequitur raps blasting off like shooting stars, the production ends up hemming in some of his frenetic energy.

Consciousness is the result of consummate artistic process and taste. However, the sum of the whole is greater than the individual parts, but for the most part Same Days has it in him to speak for the style and the impact of this kind of genre.

On most of the beats, except “You See Me,” featuring Finley Trusler, they seem to establish a tendency for laid-back synth melodies, while the second half being a bit more haphazard. The beats start becoming prone to monotony, sometimes exposing Same Days’ less inspired zingers, when applicable.

Though listeners may be easily distracted by all the fun action of the rapper’s tales, Consciousness is ultimately a love and hype  story combined in different ways. It’s hard to pick highlights, as the album is sequential and should be listened to all at once for the full experience.
