Music Review: YellaCatt – Super Power Pussy

    YellaCatt - Super Power Pussy-2

At the heart of YellaCatt’s seductive, 21st-century pop offering, her take on this genre is a strange aberration within a pretty solid oeuvre of an alluring and provocative music video.

On that level of meta-performance, we see YellaCatt reclaiming the song’s title as a source of power. Think about Miley Cyrus, who charmed her way into the hearts of Americans everywhere when she played the role of Hannah Montana, confidently stating that she would never be a naughty girl. And…well…here we are.

The music video “Super Power Pussy,” directed by Sequoia Emmanuelle, gives YellaCatt the freedom to realize she can literally do whatever she wants. Through colorful light effects, captivating backgrounds and suggestive structural costumes, she taunts her audience in ways that transform women’s position of inferiority to one of dominance.

YellaCatt represents a sense of liberation from traditional constructs of femininity by asserting her identity as a rebel. Looking at her music video from this point of view demonstrates two main points. Firstly, it reflects the power of popular culture to shape our views about sex. Secondly, her video demonstrates how popular culture in many ways is a sign of resistance between creators and consumers, in producing dominant cultural meanings.

As Lady Gaga taught us, you’re not a pop icon until you’ve rubbed some people the wrong way. That being said, YellaCatt revitalizes herself as a bold sex symbol, promoting her liberation from conventional constructs. Besides the song’s steamy lyrics and sensuous beat, the theatrical nature of the music video adds shock value, which she employs strategically to draw her audience through aesthetic provocations. But many potential fans will consider whether she comes close to competing with the hottest female artist in the game right now, Megan Thee Stallion, especially with her “Big Ole Freak” music video.

But much like Lady Gaga, YellaCatt doesn’t adopt the ‘less is more’ style, unlike anything else we see in pop, this music video becomes excessive but in the best way. This gives her song and her seductive vocals maximum effect, letting her audience know that she cares much about aesthetic and artistic value when it comes to giving an unforgettable and entertaining experience.
