The title is inspired by Raekwon’s solo 1995 debut, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…, and even received the official stamp of approval from the Wu-Tang legend, Takeoff told Complex. After a very quiet 2021, in which Jack Harlow only released the single “SUVs (Black on Black)”, in collaboration with Pooh Shiesty, and was featured on Lil Nas X’s smash hit, “INDUSTRY BABY”, the rapper released Come Home The Kids Miss You. It’s his sophomore studio album from, released on May 6, 2022, and coming two years after his successful debut album Thats What They All Say. Mosi Reeves of Rolling Stone had a mixed review of the album, opining that Harlow “doesn’t seem interested in much beyond dominating the charts” and that what Harlow is trying to say is an “unresolved question.” Andree Gee of the same outlet characterized it as “underwhelming”.

Nas released King’s Disease III, the third installment in his run of Hit-Boy-produced King’s Disease albums. Nas and Hit-Boy released the first King’s Disease back in 2020, ushering in a new era for the legendary rapper after 2018’s uneven, Kanye West produced NASIRKing’s Disease II followed in 2021, as did Magic, another album from the two artists that Nas surprised released later that year. Unlike their past installments of the album series, the third edition of King’s Disease has no features.

Traumazine is the second studio album by American rapper Megan Thee Stallion, released on August 12, 2022. She dropped the sophomore album amid ongoing label issues. Megan signed a contract with 1501 Certified Entertainment, with whom she faced off in court earlier in 2022. In the lawsuit, 1501 alleged that Megan’s October 2021 mixtape, “Something for Thee Hotties,” did not meet the definition of an album and therefore did not fulfill her contract. The album’s release could mark the end of what she’s long contended is an unfair contract with 1501 Entertainment, she claimed. “WE ALMOST OUT ,” she tweeted the day before she announced the album.

Produced by the Alchemist, Black Noise, Ancestors, Samiyam, and Alexander Spit, among others, Sick! sees Earl once again keeping things short and sweet. Sick! was recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic and found Earl “lean[ing] into the chaos” as peoples’ health deteriorated and their anger and restlessness grew. Tom Breihan of Stereogum named Sick! “Album of the Week”, stating, “SICK! is the first Earl Sweatshirt album that doesn’t sound more freaked-out and withdrawn than the one that came before. The 16-track release features an appearance from Travis Scott on a song called “Pussy & Millions.” A cut titled “Circo Loco” features a sample and vocal interpolation of Daft Punk’s Discovery hit “One More Time.” They also released a music video for their collaborative track “Jimmy Cooks,” which appears on Drake’s most recent solo LP, Honestly, Nevermind. Vernon Ayiku of Exclaim! praised the album, stating, “While Her Loss houses no immediate street bangers or Billboard hits, it’s the sum that makes it Drake’s best record this decade. Logic spoke out on social media about mistreatment by his label, DefJam, detailing that they had messed up his release plans for the singles and subsequent music video. Riley Wallace from HipHopDX gave the album a positive review stating, “Conceptually, the sequencing and pace of the LP is stellar; it sounds excellent, the features show up and show out and the skits, though maybe overkill, do help give things a ’90s college radio mixtape feel (complete with Funk Flex as a de facto host and hype man).”

One of the LP’s tracks, “Unhinged,” was produced by Animoss and features Chuck Strangers. Another, “Still Holding,” was produced by Preservation and features Joi and GoneToHeaven.

Conway the Machine dropped his Shady Records second studio album God Don’t Make Mistakes. The Buffalo lyricist’s latest album stands at 12 tracks and boasts features from Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Benny the Butcher, Westside Gunn, T.I., Jill Scott, and others. It also includes production from The Alchemist, Daringer, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, and Hit-Boy, among others. In the review for Exclaim!, Luke Fox compared the album to other releases from Eminem’s label, declaring that it “avoids the mistakes some of Slim Shady’s other find-and-signs have fallen victim to. That’s due to an ear for dope beats in his wheelhouse and a willingness to, occasionally, get thug emo.”

NJ artist Cakes Da Killa dropped his hip-hop infused house album, Svengali. The album features recent singles “Drugs Du Jour” and “Sip Of My Sip,” along with the just-released “Rabbit Hole.” Warped synths and classic house percussion lay out the red carpet for Cakes’ effortless raps that bounce in perfect time. The Elephant Man’s Bones is a collaborative album from Roc Marciano & The Alchemist, fully produced by The Alchemist, featuring Action Bronson, Boldy James, Ice-T, & Knowledge The Pirate. The album isn’t Roc Marciano and The Alchemist’s first full-length collaboration. In 2011, they teamed up for the Greneberg EP with Al’s Gangrene partner Oh No (the brother of fellow beat wizard Madlib). Since then, they’ve remained prolific collaborators, working tother on Roc Marci albums like ReloadedThe Pimpire Strikes Back and Behold a Dark Horse, as well as various Alchemist projects. The duo released four songs together in 2018 alone, including one featuring Black Thought.

Following the new single “The Rev3nge,” Joey Bada$$ dropped a new album called 2000 on July 22 via Columbia Records. Pitchfork gave a positive review of 2000, praising the album’s production. “The wide-ranging production often makes it easy to ignore the rough spots. Classy instrumental interpolations and crossover beats. It’s a testament to Joey’s growing ear that he sounds good on all of them.” However, Pitchfork also called 2000 “underwhelming” in comparison to the buildup the album had since the release of 1999 in 2012.

$oul $old $eparately is Freddie Gibbs’ fifth solo studio album. Its title is taken from “Education”, a track from his 2019 album Bandana with Madlib. On its closing line, he raps: “Drugs for the free, soul sold separately.” Thomas Hobbs of Telegraph.co.uk characterizes the album’s moods as a balance “between feeling like you’re king of the world, unwinding in a presidential suites, and being… paranoid of jealous enemies.” Paul Attard of Slant comments that Gibbs mostly discusses his controversies “in ways that allow him to avoid explaining himself fully”.

Aethiopes is the tenth studio album by the prolific Brooklyn rapper billy woods. In an interview with FADER, billy stated that this is his largest and most broad album conceptually. This is reflected in the album’s title “aethiopes,” a word with an uncertain definition. Historically, the word referred to dark-skinned people living in certain areas (specifically the south of the Sahara but also within the upper Nile). However, modern usage typically alludes to the country of Ethiopia.

The inspiration for LOUIE came about after Kenny Beats learned of his father’s diagnosis with pancreatic cancer while in the UK amidst the isolation of COVID. While processing the news, Kenny began to revisit the mixtapes his father made for friends and family containing music ranging from Sade to Willie Nelson to Dr. Dre.
