Soki Yue on her creative tastes, being inspired by Queen and her new single ‘fangs’

Great to have you on Xttrawave. Please, introduce yourself.

Thank you so much for having My name is Soki Yue and I’m an independent singer-songwriter. I currently live in Denmark but I’m hoping to move to Canada where I have some family so I can start focusing solely on music.

What got you into music and made you realize that it was your chosen path?

I’ve always loved writing since I was little and wrote a lot of songs. I never thought about singing until some years ago though. I felt so excited to see my lyrics come to life when I finally gave it a go. That’s when I knew that music was the only thing I wanted to do. I love the process of it, creating it, and seeing everything come together slowly. It’s so interesting and thrilling in its own way.

Tell us about your new music? And what’s the story behind it?

I started writing ‘fangs’ last year in 2021 when I was talking to a producer called Tendo. None of us had made an indie-rock song before so it was a new experience. I knew I wanted to write a song based on my childhood insecurities but I never knew how much relief I would get from it. The last part of the song is like an explosion of emotions and instruments. I actually had some trouble recording the last vocals since I’m not the type of person who raises their voice very often – but due to that, I found the whole experience quite relieving. I hope that everyone who listens to the song will feel some sort of relief as well.

What makes your music unique? How would you describe it?

I’m still quite new to the whole music scene compared to others and lack a lot of experience, but I believe that also helps me be a bit more free and experimental when it comes to genres and concepts. I don’t like being restricted to one category so when it comes to future songs, my options are wide open which also keeps listeners on their toes.

Who are your biggest music influences? And any particular artist/band you would like to collaborate with in the future?

I’ve recently fallen in love with Queen and their music. I believe the most essential part of music and growing within it is going back to the ‘basics’. A lot of new music consists of modern, new elements – which is great but I think it’s important to remember the sole foundation of it which is why I love bands like Queen, The Smiths, etc. My dream collab would definitely be Arctic Monkeys or cigarettes after sex!

They capture the essence of modern music but also have various elements that old bands used to have. They’re incredibly talented and I wish to make music like them one day.

Which is the best moment in your musical career that you’re most proud of?

I think I’m most proud of this project. It was definitely a long ride but I’m so happy with the end result. If I had to choose something else, it would probably be my first performance. I was only 15 at the time and dealt with a lot of stage fright so I was very nervous to go in front of a crowd. Turns out it wasn’t that scary after all!

How do you balance your music with other obligations –family, friends or work?

I’m very lucky to have a supportive family so that isn’t a problem for me. I’m also naturally an introvert so I only have very few friends that I see from time to time. As for work, it is a bit trickier to balance. I can’t support myself solely from music so I need to work too. Even though it can be frustrating, I think it’s just as important as creating music since it keeps me on the ground.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?

Just leap into it! It’s a form of art and if you feel that it resonates with you, I don’t see a reason why you shouldn’t give it a shot. The best thing you can do is just to create, create, create. Keep writing and creating and I promise you will improve.

If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?

Thank you for supporting me, listening and being just as excited about new projects as me!

What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects?

I’m always writing and thinking about upcoming For now, my top priority is making quality music so stay tuned for more exciting things in the near future!
