Bio: Who is Harry Styles?

Harry Styles (real name Harry Edward Styles) was born on February 1, 1994 in Redditch, England. The British pop singer and actor, was a member of the boy band One Direction. Even those who have never heard of One Direction are probably still familiar with the band’s charming, curly-haired singer. In the year 2010, Harry Styles presented audition for The X Factor, where he performed the song “Is not She Lovely” by Stevie Wonder and was selected. After the audition in The X Factor, the jury Nicole Scherzinger suggested that Harry Styles be part of a future band that would be called One Direction. One Direction  released their first studio album entitled “Up All Night” which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Eventually the band released several commercially successful albums, performed on a worldwide tour, and won several awards. However, following his self- imposed hiatus, Harry Styles pursued his solo career. In 2017, he released his debut single, “Sign of the Times,” and a self-titled album. In 2020, he received praise for his second solo album, Fine Line. Styles received numerous nominations and awards, among them the 2021 Grammy Award for Best Pop Solo Performance, for his song “Watermelon Sugar,” for which he also won the 2021 BRIT Award for British Single of the Year. In 2022, he released his third album Harry’s House.

1. As It Was

As It Was” is a sub-three-minute track that is part of 13 songs on the singer’s third album, Harry’s House. The song opens with a child’s voice saying, “Come on Harry, we wanna say goodnight to you”, before launching into an infectious ’80s inspired hook. It was co-written and produced by Styles’ longtime collaborators Kid Harpoon and Tyler Johnson. “As It Was” debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart, becoming Styles’ second number-one single after “Sign of the Times”. It also earned the title of Song of the Summer, according to Billboard magazine. The pop singer’s hit held strong at No. 1 for the entire summer — a total of 20 weeks.  Only three songs have led longer over the survey’s 64-year history.

2. Sign of the Times

Sign of the Times” is the debut solo single by the British singer from his self-titled debut studio album and was released exactly 30 years after the release of Prince’s seminal album Sign ‘O’ The Times. “Most of the stuff that hurts me about what’s going on at the moment is not politics, it’s fundamentals … Equal rights. For everyone, all races, sexes, everything. … ’Sign of the Times’ came from ‘This isn’t the first time we’ve been in a hard time, and it’s not going to be the last time,’” Styles told Rolling Stone at the time of the song’s release. Years after, the atmospheric music video reached one billion YouTube views

3. Adore You

Adore You” is the third single from Styles’ second solo studio album: Fine Line. Styles’ uses the cloudy, seaside charm of a fictional island in the United Kingdom to explain love and friendship in its many diverse and ambiguous forms. The Dave Meyers-directed short, which Rosalía narrates, tells the epic story of a boy who feels out of place on the isolated, gloomy (fictional) island of Eroda that he lives on. It’s a small, superstitious fishing village where no one ever smiles, and men wear single gold earrings for good luck. Styles, though, is the sole golden boy of the isle—the only one who walks around with a blindingly bright grin. The song peaked at number six on the US Billboard Hot 100 and at number seven on the UK Singles Chart.

4. Watermelon Sugar

Watermelon Sugar” was released on November 16, 2019 as the fourth single and appears as the second track from Styles’ second studio album, Fine Line. The song constantly had fans guessing who the lyrics are actually about, from ex-girlfriends to mystery lovers. “It doesn’t really matter what it’s about. It’s about the sweetness of life.” Harry said of the song’s meaning. However, he did later add, “It’s also about the female orgasm, but that’s totally different. It’s not really relevant.” More so, David Levesley of GQ described the song as “A lusty bop with a chorus perfectly designed for chanting in a stadium, there’s a spiritualism to it, a raunch to it and a simplicity that means you’ll have it trapped in your head for days once you’ve listened.” The music video arrived just after the world’s first lockdown in wake of the pandemic. Dressed head-to-toe in Gucci, Styles gently caressed a cut watermelon before bikini-clad women fed fruit to the artist on the beach.

5. Golden

Golden” is the first track from Harry’s album, Fine Line and was released on October 26, 2020. Styles said that “Golden” was written on the second day of the Fine Line writing process in Shangri-La (Rick Rubin’s recording studio), and he had a feeling about it from the start. “Making this record just felt… joyous,” Styles shared. “I was with my friends and we were in Malibu and I felt so safe. Now’s the time to have fun—we’re 24, and I’m in music. I’m not a politician.” he said in an interview with Zane Lowe. “Immediately, as soon as we’d done it, it was like, ‘Oh, this is track one,’” Styles said. “I used to drive to the studio, and it’s the perfect PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) song. It’s like driving down the coast is what the song is for. It feels so Malibu to me.” As ever, the video looks as though it could have been made during the 1967 Summer Of Love, with – you guessed it – golden hues and bursts of sunshine aplenty. Directed by Ben and Gabe Turner, the three-and-a-half-minute video — shot in Italy amid the coronavirus pandemic — features Styles running, driving, and swimming throughout the Amalfi Coast. Styles mostly wears a bulky white long-sleeved shirt during the video, but also shows off other creative outfits such as a yellow bucket hat with long pants and a light blue suit jacket over a button-down and checkered pants. He also goes shirtless altogether while taking a swim in the water.

6. Falling

Falling” is a ballad released on 7 March 2020 as the third single from Styles’ second studio album, Fine Line (2019). He said the song is all about the feelings of slipping into the grief of a breakup. “Falling is about getting right before a place that you recognize as a low for you,” he told RADIO.com. “You kind of feel yourself falling back into that down period, I guess, and being sad about what you lost.” The video has Styles alone in what looks like a beautiful Parisian apartment with a piano and a glass of brown liquor. He looks incredible in a lavender top and brown trousers. As he sings the ballad, the room is slowly filling with water until, in the end, he’s fully submerged, drowning.

7. Lights Up

Lights Up” is the pop singer’s fourth track from his second studio album Fine Line, and was released as the lead single on October 11, 2019. Styles’ sings of coming to terms with and having pride in one’s own identity. Mixing guitar riffs with a slight electronic production, Harry’s honey vocals take center stage on the track, asking listeners “What do you mean?” and “Do you know who you are?” to create the ultimate groovy bop. For the accompanying music video, Harry leans fully into psychedelia. We see the singer shirtless, living out an orgy-like haze dream, then wearing a full-on silver sequin suit on the beach, and riding on the back of a motorcycle while sitting backward. According to his Rolling Stone article, Styles recorded his new album by taking psychedelics, laying in the grass, and listening to the Beatles.

8. Kiwi

Kiwi” is from the British singer’s debut album Harry Styles, and was released as the third single from the album on October 31, 2017. The song revolves around a woman who is admired by everyone. She drinks hard liquor and smokes cheap cigarettes. Her most definite stance is that she plans on keeping the baby fathered by the song’s narrator. Not only that, but her decision to do this is absolutely none of the narrator’s business. In the music video, Styles’ is seen teaming up with Star Wars actress Beau Gadsdon, clad in a matching floral suit, as the pair go against a host of school kids in a fierce cake fight. The video ends with Styles posing for a class portrait with the students, whose clothes are smeared with frosting. As the final note of the rock song plays, the pop singer smirks and the video cuts to black.

9. Sweet Creature

Sweet Creature” serves as the fifth track from Harry’s self-titled album, Harry Styles, which was released as a promotional single on May 2, 2017 ahead of the album release. With a soothing, sweet acoustic vibe and lyrics to match, “Sweet Creature” seems to be an ode to a former or present love who Styles feels distant from because of their arguing. Be that as it may, Styles told Billboard “Sweet Creature is definitely about one person, but I think it’s important to remember that there’s many different types of things that could be about…I think the best thing about music is everyone can take away different things from stuff and that’s not wrong, there’s not really a wrong answer”.

10. Two Ghosts

Two Ghosts” is a song featured on Harry Styles self-titled debut studio album. In the track’s opening lines, Styles fantasizes about a woman with red lipstick and blue eyes with whom he used to be romantically involved with. He seems to realize his thoughts are no longer his reality. The catchy tune had fans already speculating that it’s about Styles’ ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift. The song opens with Styles singing, “Same lips red, same eyes blue/Same white shirt, couple more tattoos.” The lyrics are highly reminiscent of lyrics Swift sings on “Style,” a track on her 2014 opus, 1989. In that song Swift sings about a guy with “long hair slicked back, white T-shirt” and a “red lip, classic thing that you like.” Styles’ also had an awkward response when asked if he wrote the song about Swift in an interview with BBC Radio1’s Nick Grimshaw. When Styles realised where the host’s line of questioning was going he said “I think it’s pretty, like, self-explanatory.”
