The CMT (Country Music Television) Music Awards has just taken the country music world by storm! This year’s event was held at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas, and it was a night to remember. Hosted by the talented Kelsea Ballerini and Kane Brown, the awards were voted on by the fans and featured performances by some of the biggest names in country music.
Kane Brown made history with his spouse Katelyn Brown, becoming the first husband-and-wife duo to win the video of the year award for their hit song “Thank God.” It was a momentous occasion for the Browns, marking their first win in the category. Rapper and country singer Jelly Roll also had a big night, taking home three trophies including male breakthrough video of the year.
The ceremony was star-studded, with performances by Gwen Stefani, Carrie Underwood, LeAnn Rimes, Keith Urban, and Alanis Morissette, who made her CMT debut with a performance celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the “CMT Next Women of Country.” Country music icon Shania Twain received the 2023 “CMT Equal Play Award,” and Stevie Ray Vaughan and Lynyrd Skynyrd were honored with tribute performances by various artists.
Carrie Underwood remains the CMT Awards all-time winner with 25 wins total, but this year did not take home any trophies. However, Lainey Wilson won the female video of the year for her song “Heart Like a Truck.”
Other winners included Zac Brown Band for group/duo video of the year, Megan Moroney for female breakthrough video of the year, and Jelly Roll for male breakthrough video of the year.
The awards also recognized outstanding performances in the industry with categories such as CMT performance of the year and CMT digital-first performance of the year. Cody Johnson won the CMT performance of the year for his performance of “‘Til You Can’t” from the 2022 CMT Music Awards, while Jelly Roll won the CMT digital-first performance of the year for his performance of “Son of a Sinner” from “CMT All Access.”
