Hi this is Hatter from London, UK. When I was young I was obsessed with MadHatter’s tea party & that’s where the name originates from.
What got you into music and made you realize that it was your chosen path?
I started out writing MC lyrics over existing songs (Hip Hop, Jungle, UK Garage, House Music) back in 1996 and was always drawn to music with a catchy bassline.
Tell us about your new music? And what’s the story behind it?
This song is based on a true story about meeting a stranger who was already in a relationship and falling in “love at first sight”.
It embraces the deepest desire of having a discreet connection with a “Secret Lover”, encourages us to act on our emotions and feel those butterflies in your stomach even if you’re in a relationship with someone else!
What makes your music unique? How would you describe it?
It’s a culture clash infused from influences around the world – Urban Pop, RNB/Rap with a Retro vibe. I don’t believe in sticking to genres – we live in a society where young people are embracing changing gender – why should an artist stick with an old skool rigid mentality of having to stick to just one genre of music style?
Who are your biggest musical influences? And any particular artist/band you would like to collaborate with in the future?
Dj Khaled, Nicky Jam, Ardian Bujupi, French Montana, Bad Bunny, The Weeknd. I just absorb everything I listen to and let the music flow! It would be amazing to collaborate with Nicky Jam & maybe Mabel on the same track and see what that sounds like.
Which is the best moment in your musical career that you’re most proud of?
I think it has to be my early performances at clubs around the UK when I just started out as an MC / Club Host when I was surrounded by global talent and it just felt amazing to be a part of the scene.
How do you balance your music with other obligations – family, friends or work?
I don’t lol.. I’m more the kind of person who blocks everything and everyone out of my life and focuses on what I need to get done. Live in the moment and that’s where creativity unfolds.
What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
Don’t worry about trying to impress peers in the industry. Just focus on making good music…music that’s so good that even you would put it on repeat just like you would someone else’s song and remember that nobody likes all types of music. Find the people who are relevant to your talent and focus on sharing it with them.
If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?
I focus on making music that resonates in the hearts of everyday people who go through the same emotions and tragedies I have – if that’s you, then we need to connect!!
What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects?
I am currently working on something a little different to Secret Lover, it is more Pop and less RNB but will always be of the highest production / vocal quality.
