Music Interview: Margarita Shamrakov on her creative tastes, musical influences & new music

Margarita Shamrakov is a Ukrainian-American citizen with a heart as big as her legacy. Her story is one of toil and triumph. Having come from a difficult and abusive childhood, Margarita has learned what it means to cultivate a lifestyle of positive well-being centered around mental health. Through decades of hard-fought experience, her story pours out through her words and her music, hoping to give inspiration to people who want to change their lives for the better.

100 Things to Change Life, at its very essence, speaks to those who are struggling to find their place in the world, just as Margarita had to in her formative years. As a Jewish refugee alone in the United States, Margarita discerned valuable life-lessons in self-reliance and overcoming crippling depression. Today, she is living proof that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to.
Margarita continues to thrive by creating music from her heart and helping others through difficult times. She currently lives in New York City with her daughter, Kingsley and their dog, Marshall.

Great to have you on Xttrawave. Please, introduce yourself.

Margarita Shamrakov. Originally from Dnepropetrovsk Ukraine and now live in New York

What got you into music and made you realize that it was your chosen path?

Wanting to be loved and love for music. Also wanting somehow escape the circle of life and death if possible.

Tell us about your new music? And what’s the story behind it?

[Good Girls] and [Don’t want to Die Alone]

Both songs are one of my first where I did everything recording and production.

What makes your music unique? And how would you describe it?

Nothing. I am not unique. Just write music. It would be nice to be special maybe.

Do you play any instruments? And why do you love it?

Piano and lots of everything a little bit.

Who are your biggest musical influences? And any particular artist/band you would like to collaborate with in the future?

Nirvana, Tori Amos, Bach, The Police, the 1975, Justin Bieber, Tatu, Sting, Katy Perry, Sia and many more

Which is the best moment in your musical career that you’re most proud of?

Wishing the John Lennon Songwriting Award

How do you balance your music with other obligations – family, friends or work?

That is hard. I am a mom in NYC and I have to support my daughter.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?

You know the more I am alive the more I understand that I do not know anything.

What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects?

Radium Girls about Radium girls in 1920 who worked with radium and got poisoned yet big corporations denied responsibility for so long. Many girls died very young. Their graves are still radioactive and will be for another 3000 years.
