Chris Corey leans on the heavy side of pop rock and develops a sharp ear for hooks and an apparently inexhaustible supply of melodies.
The three songs captured on his latest EP, Wildfire, resign to a beautiful, high-spirited vibrancy that permeates the heart through the artist’s sparkly melodies and potent vocals, which gives added weight and depth to his work. The EP provides a solid clue to his state of mind as he delves on lyrics that weave through love and heartache.
On “Wildfire” the self-titled opening track, Chris Corey pulls it all together with a streamlined, uptempo rhythm and quicksilver drum fills, and becomes a rare piece of brightness, jangling and buzzing with some open-hearted sincerity and big hooks to the mix. It’s quite a driving and tenacious record that never loses its feral appeal.
“Worried About You” is a record that manages to reflect most people’s urge to show their loving and caring side and still be able to enjoy themselves in the process. It’s full of earnest lyrics and features a cycle of piano keys and guitar strings with brightly hued vocals from the artist.
Chris Corey’s performance brims with energy and he has a joyous sense of freedom that comes through in his vocals and the rippling repetitive guitar licks and power-packed drumming. His love musings prove just as adept at his more subdued song “Feel My Love” that stirs a heartfelt undercurrent. It’s deceptively simple stuff packed with a high density of intriguing incidental details.
The blending of opposite emotions and varied styles makes for a fascinating project. It’s surprising, unexpectedly tender, and above all, thought-provoking. Chris Corey has supposedly set his sights on reinterpreting pop rock music in his own inimitable fashion. Even by today’s music standards, this seems like a wild and passionate EP that sounds too good to be true.
