Music Review: Deus Seis – You Ready

Deus Seis - You Ready-2

“You Ready” is very much an exercise in fast-life rap, beholden to all the structural touchstones of a modern-day mainstream rap releases, but this time Deus Seis’ living life on the fast lane comes with a refined flair for storytelling.

This new record is structured around a familiar conceit – a day in the life of a young hustler who can’t seem to avoid what makes him happy – and will provoke appropriate comparisons to life in the streets. But it also reveals a songwriter who remains captivating even when he pushes his trademark tough guy posturing to the side.

The production sees Deus Seis lay his wares out early, driving home simple hooks flanked by little else but 808 kicks and claps, occasionally throwing in a weird embellishment or two. Love it or loathe it, unashamed fast-life rap exists, and in 2019, it thrives with folks like Chief Keef and other Chicago-based artists ruling the youth side of the genre, while Southern smokers take up the rest of the chart positions, including plenty of freaky hits for Gucci ManeĀ and glitzy baller smashes coming from the Miami-based DonĀ Rick Ross.

However, “You Ready” is a song that achieves most of what it sets out to achieve. The bizarre by-product is the presence of an intangible magic that sets it apart from more predictable offerings of mumble rap. That might just be the assertive nature of youth, but it’s also down to a talented artist overseeing it all, whose kept his ear to the streets.

One can’t reasonably foresee how well “You Ready” will age, but it’s definitely worth your time right now – it will raise a few smiles, break a few necks and should be listened to loudly in residential areas. It also acts as further confirmation that Deus Seis is just getting started.
