Music Review: Knarly Jones – Atonement

Knarly Jones - Atonement-2

Knarly Jones uses a bespoke tuning system, the music producer from Detroit, Michigan builds his song inside an otherworldly ecosystem of sound using the pulse of Electro and Progressive House . It’s simply alluring.

He harnesses subtle differences in pitch to create sparkling, crystalline fields of sound. You know that feeling when you hear a really amazing song and your hairs go up on your body? You don’t need to understand the intricacies of dance music when Knarly Jones creates a high energy track and after listening to his new single “Atonement” for a while, you are not only impressed but left breaking a sweat or two.

His most evocative work yet, Knarly Jones tugs at the heartstrings to the same effect as the feet; his melodies and instrumentation hint at a fondness that fuses clean-lined machine rhythms with the vivid detailing of electronic sounds which is pretty thrilling in its own right.

Drums, which toggle between four-to-the-floor pulses and the syncopated snap of classic Electro snares, have the satisfying thwack that has distinguished popular recordings. And the producer tops it off with full crisp hi-hats and sternum-thumping kicks, while his layered pads and bass wobbles have an almost three-dimensional feel.

Every element exists in a state of perpetual flux: timbres morphing, proportions shifting, patterns rising and falling in the mix, all of it almost imperceptibly in constant motion. Knarly Jones is on sure footing with the mix. His sensibility runs deep on the single and that vibrancy has something to do with the use of engaging dynamics. The cumulative effect is awesome and captivating.
