soni. shows a new side of himself musically in his latest ep “voicemails.” and discusses what’s next.

Soni-Voicemail-2

After the past two years soni takes a musical shift in his latest ep titled voicemails. Utilizing the past few years as a time for self reflection for himself he shows a newer side of himself first and foremost by displaying his own vocals on the project. Soni himself has been primarily established as an instrumental musician primarily creating guitar centered lofi hip hop and jazz/funk styled singles. But with his latest project he trades in his experimental samplings and jam styled guitar playing for more straight forward indie inspired grooves and melodies.

The ep itself is structured like a short story of self acceptance and growth, the first song titled “short song” is a cover from Rob Scallon, the song itself is centered about the central idea of reaching out to colleagues and friends after the passing of a close friend. After passing the melancholic torch from the first track the short 4 songed ep explores the ideas of how soni had felt cooped up at home and the lows we’ve grown accustomed to from losing loved ones, losing touch with ourselves and losing passion in the things that should’ve brought us joy. However the ep ends on the note that despite these things even if someone is not used to the idea that things will be ok that doesn’t mean you still can’t learn to enjoy that feeling.

The ep is a change of pace in soni’s discography when asked “soni.” had this to say.

“I really needed some change in my life, I lost a close friend and the years made it already more difficult to stay in touch not just with people but with myself. I’ve never liked my own voice but I needed something uncomfortable to work on to push myself somewhere. I still plan on making what I was doing before but I’m more interested in doing more on top of that as well so I’m excited for the future.”

“Voicemails.” is out now on all streaming platforms.
