Bio: Who is Lil Durk?

Lil Durk (born October 19, 1992) is the stage name of Durk Derrick Banks, who is a singer, songwriter, and rapper from Chicago, Illinois. The rapper as well as Chief Keef, Young Chop and Lil Reese, helped popularize this dark, violent and nihilistic subgenre of trap and rap music. He also has his own record label, ‘Only the Family’, which has collaborated closely with Def Jam Recordings. The violent neighborhood where he was born and brought up had an adverse impact on his family. His father was imprisoned for life in the year 1994 on drug related charges and his family faced financial hardships during his childhood. Chicago’s street violence had an impact on many of his early releases.

1. Dis Ain’t What U Want

Dis Ain’t What U Want“, is a shiver-inducing anthem from the Lil Durk, only more muscular and expensive-sounding than previous singles. Produced by his go-to beatsmith Paris Beuller, it features a frustrated-as-hell Durk fed up with being a scapegoat for Chicago’s violence epidemic. Eif Rievra directed the stark, black-and-white video for Lil Durk’s excellent “Dis Ain’t What U Want,” shot outside Durk’s grandmother’s house in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood.

2. AHHH HA

In the single “Ahhh Ha“, Lil Durk took subliminal and explicit shots at YoungBoy Never Broke Again’s crew and affiliates. The Jerry Production video fits at least a dozen of the Chicago rapper’s closest confidants into most frames. When they aren’t hyping up the track over stacks of cash, they’re chilling in the snowed out Englewood streets. Throughout the visual, the rapper rocks an iced out ring in tribute to a late friend.

3. The Voice

Lil Durk took full advantage of 2020 by establishing himself as one of the top tier rappers. On “The Voice” Durk isn’t afraid to tout his abilities in the booth. He won’t back down from making grand comparisons either, as he deemed himself the “Chicago JAY-Z”. The song was certified gold after selling more than 500,000 total album-equivalent units in the United States. This came nearly four months after Durk unleashed his Just Cause Y’all Waited 2 album, just weeks after he dropped his “Laugh Now, Cry Later” track with Drake.

4. Street Affection

On Just Cause Y’all Waited 2, Durk continues to display his raw emotional lyrics and packages them in tracks that pay homage to the drill scene, while also offering up some melodies. On “Street Affection,” that’s exactly what Durk does as he gets honest about his life and the pitfalls of leading a certain lifestyle.

5. My Beyoncé (ft. Dej Loaf)

Lil Durk came up doing granite-hard Chicago drill music, but he’s fully capable of making a romantic ballad. And “My Beyoncé,” Durk’s new duet with his fellow Midwest sing-rapper and new girlfriend DeJ Loaf, is as gooey as love songs get. The track’s premise is that Durk and DeJ are the new Jay Z and Beyoncé, and while the talented lovebirds don’t seem destined to become icons of that stature, they definitely have chemistry here.

6. I Know

On “I Know” Durk touches on a lot of things, including his time in jail, his loyalty, acquaintances loyalty & growing up in the trenches. The rapper’s video was done by Laka Films who’s done visual work for Ski Mask The Slump God, G Herbo and more. 8. Like Me (ft. Jeremih)

Lil Durk makes another for-the-radio rap/R&B single without ditching any of the weird melodic intensity that makes him such an interesting rapper in the first place. “Like Me” pairs Durk up with fellow Chicagoan Jeremih. Its video, from director Eif Rivera, has a relationship-centric storyline, but it’s most memorable for the shots of the two stars on a Chicago rooftop, wearing weird fur collar things.

9. All Love

Following Love Songs 4 The Streets 2, the OTF rapper returned with a new single titled “All Love,” which sees production from Young T and TouchofTrent. The track sees Durk paying homage to Chicago and his stomping grounds within. On the music video, we get a look into the rapper’s monetary success with clips of fancy cars and iced out watches. But what makes Durk stand out is his ability to tell a vivid story through his lyrics while remaining authentic to himself, as someone whoset made something out of nothing. It doesn’t feel like he’s exaggerating his past experiences, though he doesn’t downplay the impact his past has had on his new reality.

10. What Happened To Virgil ( ft. Gunna)

Lil Durk’s track “What Happened To Virgil” from his album, 7220, has fans confused over who Virgil is and his relation to the rapper. It’s a fan-favourite, although not everyone is familiar with the story behind it. Virgil refers to Virgil Abloh, the late fashion designer behind luxury brands Off-White and Louis Vuitton menswear. The designer unexpectedly passed away on 28 November 2021 at age 41 in Chicago due to a rare cancer called cardiac angiosarcoma. However, he privately battled the disease for over two years – and his family announced the death via Instagram. This implies that Durk was mourning the death of his friend; the pair have known each other since at least 2015 and had been seen tweeting each other on numerous occasions.

11. Golden Child

Sharing the Jerry Production-directed video, Durk came through with “Golden Child,” a bars-heavy effort produced by Hitmaka, YC, Cubeatz, and Real Red. In his second verse, Durk seemingly calls out DJ Vlad, who some rappers have taken issue with after the feds used his interviews to prosecute them. “I don’t speak tongues period, I don’t f*ck with Vlad,” he raps. The music video is a short, stripped-down affair, capturing a raw look at Lil Durk as he raps the song to the camera in his home while members of his crew smoke and shoot dice in the background.

This single features Durk flying solo as he beasts his way through the track. On the matthewfm-produced single, Lil Durk opens with a tribute to his late brother, D-Thang, and within a few bars, he mentions the recent home invasion that reportedly had both him and his girlfriend India Royale exchanging gunfire with the suspects. There is definitely aggression behind this one, so stream “Pissed Me Off” and let us know your first thoughts on this one.
