After previously having a successful career in music publishing, Znas turned his sights on a career as an independent artist. Since then he has exploded on to the scene gaining quite a reputation for his outstanding musical skills and unique conceptual releases. He has quickly become one of his home country’s most treasured talents. We caught up with Znas to discuss his latest remix release of Jeekay’s Alpha Centuri, check out what he had to say below.
How did the idea come about for you to remix Jeekay’s ‘Alpha Centuri’?
It was an idea that came from me. I thought it would be wise to remix each of my artists to help them in their professional careers, so I asked them what they thought of the idea and they thought it was great. The track was chosen by me from among those that make up Jeekay’s latest EP.
What was the inspiration behind your version of the track?
Well, in a Remix, inspiration is always given by need. First, I deleted everything that I felt I didn’t need. I was only left with the essence of the track. From there, I started to build and create the elements I wanted for my vision. Using a simile, it would be the same as buying an old house and reforming it and decorating it as you like, deep down it is still the same house but in reality, it is not.
What goals did you have when you first sat down to create this remix?
Doing it right! A remix always has to add, never subtract. It has to bring freshness to the original track, give it a new air, it can be better or equal in quality than the original track, but never worse. If the remix is worse than the Original, the objective has not been achieved.
Do you have a favourite part of the original that you included in the remix?
Yes, I have one. It was precisely one part of the original track that I have only used. Which is a Synth that progressively ascends until reaching its culmination. It seemed to me the most significant and what really contained the soul of the track.
How would you sum up the remix in 3 words?
I am not going to qualify it, that will have to be done by listeners, the general public and music professionals.
Which artists would you like to see supporting this release?
Whoever wants to support it! For wanting to see it supported, I would like the best and most famous to do it, but that is very difficult, practically impossible for an independent artist. A chimera. The music industry doesn’t work like that unfortunately, and neither does anything in the world. The world moves by vested interests. If I belonged to an important label worldwide, I would be unconditionally supported by the rest of the artists on that label.
How has the initial reaction been like?
Very good! I am very happy with the opinions that professionals have expressed about the remix.
Do you have any more projects in the pipeline for the coming months?
Yes, I do. I have two projects already finished, of which I have not yet decided on a release date. I’m also working on a new one. The truth is that I do not rest. I do not know how to do it. If I don’t produce music it’s as if something is missing in my life, in my day to day. I cannot stop. It’s like a vice! So there’s always a new project.
