Oh Well forms tight-knit grooves on Forging a False Reality, his latest niche project where he deftly links multiple hotbeds of electronic music and creates something entirely new. Proximity is everything when you listen to the artist’s music.
He selectively fuses his music with elements of jungle, reggaeton, dubstep, grime, and drum ‘n’ bass. It’s favorable to gain traction among party-heads boasting of its big beats and orchestral pieces that threaded into the mix. The sound is marked by frantic synths and fierce and choppy drum patterns. Its turbulence and dizzying repetition reflects an artist who is passionate and experimental.
Oh Well wants to try new things while also making sure he creates music that fans will enjoy. Forging a False Reality is highly impressive especially for a track such as “Questioning Sanity” where there is a hybrid of refreshing sounds. Oh Well takes listeners on a rollercoaster of twitchy strings, whinny high-pitched vocals, furious breakbeats, and sensual soul.
The project’s self-titled track is unusual for mainstream but which DJs and producers from the underground dance-music scene my draw inspiration for its percussive, polyrhythmic sound. It’s astonishing how many energies and emotions Oh Well crams into 3 minutes and 38 seconds: angst, paranoia, thrill, fury, depression, panic, euphoria; you get a little bit of each with every passing second.
The last track “Falling For You” feels tightly edited where more often than not, Oh Well gets the timing just right. He favors the howling, and before it loses any intensity he packs in trippy bursts of chaotic drums that fizzle on top of each other like a fireworks finale. His singing takes you by surprise, filling the room with the raw sensuality over sinister synths and it only gets darker from there.
It’s too soon to give Oh Well the green light but his captivating and appealing style makes it all worth it. His mastery of ascending into a vortex of chants, syncopated drums, and cymbals poured over an oscillating howl makes his music dynamic and unique. Fans will highly appreciate stumbling onto music that rounds up original ingredients and bakes them into enthralling new forms.
