Beyoncé, JAY-Z, Childish Gambino & Oumou Sangaré join forces on star-studded music video: MOOD 4 EVA

MOOD 4 EVA - bEYONCE

Something quite special can happen when some of the best artists on the scene come together.

The fact of the matter is that MOOD 4 EVA is definitely not your average hip-hop single. There is just so much to unpack here, and while the sound of this release definitely inspired by some of the classic tropes of the genre as a primary source of influence, there is a much more diverse edge that makes it so interesting and dynamic. MOOD 4 EVA features hints of early 2000s R&B, capturing the sound that basically launched Beyoncé’s career to spice up the mix, allowing this release to really stretch the boundaries of her creativity, going for a stark and dynamic sonic vision.

The music video to this release is just as intriguing as a work of art as the song is. There is so much clever symbolism to unpack, with scenes of luxury living, fine art and cultural heritage and a lot iconic imagery, such as a middle-aged Caucasian server tending to the main artists, signifying how the tables are turning in terms of the power balance, with black artists who have originated in the underground now taking the center stage and enjoying luxury and international recognition.

Ultimately, MOOD 4 EVA screams authenticity, and it feels like a really perfect introduction to the sound and feel of this talented recording artist. It feels like Beyoncé is the kind of artist who always looks to try new ideas with her music, but in this case, she sort of settled on a comfort zone, which is not necessarily a bad thing. By avoiding the get to caught up in looking for new ideas and really trying to force innovation, she seems to have adopted a more spontaneous route, follow her instinct rather than trying to manufacture shock value in the studio. The collaborations on the track are also really spot on, with Jay-Z dishing out a verse that also reminds of his heyday. His lyrical mastery remains undisputed and there is something really crazy about how he so effortlessly fit within the context of this track, without necessarily overpowering. Childish Gambino is also a perfect fit, giving a different flavor to his parts, while Oumou Sangaré adds somewhat of an exotic flair to the mix.
